Nurse Fellowship Program – Springfield, MO
Mercy is committed to providing excellent patient care to our community. Our commitment starts with hiring and developing qualified and talented nurses. The Nurse Fellowship Program is one of many opportunities our co-workers have to sharpen their skills and begin a successful journey at Mercy.
The Nurse Fellowship Program at Mercy provides didactic learning and clinical experiences that support nurses as they transition into professional nursing practice. Nurse Fellows are full-time co-workers who partner with skilled clinicians and RN mentors providing a path of progressive development, unit specific education and orientation to Mercy. All nurse residents receive nursing orientation on their assigned unit with experienced preceptors. Newly integrated software will assess individual skills and talents; allowing our Fellowship Specialist to assist in creating a complement of education opportunities that are customized for each resident. Fellowship Specialists, in collaboration with Clinical Educators, assist in creating a plan for education and development of your desired career path.
Our Nurse Fellowship Program offers options to allow nurse residents to work in areas that match their interests and career goals.
- Women's & Children's Health
- Adult Critical Care
- Emergency Medicine
- Medical and Surgical Care
As our nurses complete this initial 12 - 20 week residency, the program will transition to an expanded Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program will continue to provide formal mentorship, as well as continued development in advanced therapies and specialty education. Throughout the Residency and Fellowship Programs, nurses have access to highly skilled experts to assist with care delivery at the bedside or in the simulation lab. In addition to clinical development, these programs will promote our mission and ensure the values of the Sisters of Mercy are integrated into our daily work and ministry.
At completion of the program, nurses become eligible to participate in Mercy’s professional nursing clinical ladder, SHINE. The clinical ladder was developed to recognize and reward RNs for their dedication in excellent nursing care, professional growth, patient experience and co-worker engagement. SHINE is an acronym for Shaping and Inspiring Nursing Excellence.

Mercy Nurse Residency Program - Springfield, MO
Mercy's Nurse Residency is an 8-month program designed to support our new graduates as they transition to independent professional practices. Offers of employment to GNs are made for a particular unit the GN indicates an interest in and interviews for. Our residency program works in collaboration with unit-specific nursing orientation to provide an evidence-based experience. All nurse residents receive nursing orientation on their assigned unit with experienced preceptors, and skill development with unit-based educators.
Residency programs are best practice and offer a variety of learning opportunities. Applicable topis are covered through 2 touch-point sessions early after hire, then we come togethet once a month for 3 classroom days, followed by a "teamwork" day which allows for coordinating in groups for Evidence Based Practive project. Our 3 classroom days take place after you have spent time in unit orientation and with your preceptor. Residency class content is relevant to nurses in every clinical specialty. The goal is to provide a foundation and focus on topics that evidence has shown to be the most vital for discussion during the first year in the nursing profession. Examples include Communication, Critical Decision Making, Ethical Situations, Patient-Centered Care, and Spirituality.
Nurse residents have an opportunity to work on a Performance Improvement project during their residency. At the end of the program, residents share their projects during a Residency Celebration, which is attended by Mercy nursing leaders, physicians, and executive administration, as well as area faculty, nursing peers and invited guests. The day culminates in a congratulatory luncheon as residents officially complete their program.
